Okay so there are quite a few steps coming up when you want to Make a Live Music Video from home and I just want to remind you to TAKE. YOUR. TIME. Don’t rush the setup and really look at your shots to see if they stand out. Here are some areas to focus on in order to get the best music video you can get. Okay, so once you’ve got everything. Find a “cool looking” spot in your room and let’s go!
Bring in Light:
The trick to any good-looking video is Lighting, So for your Music Video, you want to bring in as much extra light as you can. If you have a window, try to position yourself either facing it or relatively close to get as much natural light as you can.
Frame the Shot:
Once you have a good spot with plenty of light, you want to focus on how the shot looks in your camera. To get a nice and even shot, you want to center yourcelf in the frame. If you go too far left or right (see photos), you’ll end up with dead space which actually pulls focus away from you video’s purpose.
Quiet the Room and Set Up Microphone:
Next, you want to quiet the room by shutting off any extras electronics such as fans, computers, televisions, etc. These all give of a little bit of sound that most don’t typically notice until recording and its too late and your audio becomes fuzzy. The biggest culprit in a home is the Air Conditioner. If you can, try to shut it off for a bit while you record. When you set your recorder up, place it between you and the guitar with at least 1 foot distance from you.
Check Levels and Record:
Check your levels for peaking and adjust the microphone to find the “sweet spot” between vocals and guitar. Once you find the spot, double check all your settings and hit record on both your Audio Recorder and Camera. Record your best take and use it to Make a Live Music Video for your channel.
After you record, bring your Audio into an audio editor like Garageband or Logic Pro X. If you don’t have that, you can use the basic effects in your Video Editor. Add some subtle EQ, Compression and a little reverb to taste.
Add Effects and Color Grading:
When you’re done, bring the new audio into your Video Editor and match it up with the video you recorded earlier. Remove any excess footage and mute the Video’s original audio track so that only your new audio plays. Apply any color grading to your footage and export!
MultiTrack Recording or Movement?
If you are working with a USB Interface or Multitrack Recorder, you can take the individual audio from each instrument and vocal you record to a separate input with a separate microphone or instrument cable. From there, you can edit them in your Recording Software to fine-tune and mix your music more. To add movement, try using a motorized slider to keep the shot interesting!
