An Interview With Josh Gibson
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“The two songs I have prepared are called "What it Do" and "The Phone Works Both Ways". What it Do is a song that "spits game" in a situation where you see a girl that's way out of your league and stands out in every crowd and you take your chance to tell her how you feel about her in a solid 2 minutes. Phone Works Both Ways is a song about someone who doesn't put in the same efforts as you, whether it's in a relationship or friendship or really anything, but in this case specifically about a significant other. Its about that realization of the one sided aspect of the relationship and pulling back when you know its not good for you anymore.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I have always been surrounded by music. I started off playing drums from the age of 2 and by 6 years old was playing full sessions in churches in various states. I later picked up piano and guitar as well as producing and by my later years of high school I was writing and recording full songs. As a socially awkward outcast that's never really had anything consistent in my life, music has always been the truest form of expression for me but also given me a community to finally share those passions with.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“The music that I typically make varies as I take inspirations from every genre and artists, but mainly would consider my music to be mainstream pop vibes, taking influence from artists like Justin Bieber, Jeremy Zucker, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, etc.”
What does your music represent?
“My music represents pretty much all the emotions and experiences ive learned to face throughout my life. The ups, the downs, the casual vibes, the serious emotional vibes... anything that I feel needs to be expressed eventually becomes a song.”
What is your creative process like?
“It's different every time. Sometimes ill hear a melody when im out and about and ill repeat it in my head until I get home and can lay it down. Sometimes I'll just pick up a guitar and start playing random chords and it just flows, or ill start producing and instrumental and before I know it I have a full song on my hands about whatever has been on my mind.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Justin Bieber for sure (belieber since day one, baby), Ariana Grande, Haiden Henderson”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“Nobody who is better than you at something will ever talk down to you. Learn from those with good hearts who want to see you grow as much as you do.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“Honestly a really hard thing to think about, but anything creative really especially in the media industry (film/content creation, social networking, building a community)”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“Being able to be proud of something that stems from real raw emotions and experiences, which is something ive always felt that society has wanted me to hide.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Having an open and supportive mindset. Look not just at the finished product, but everything it took to make it happen.”
