What You Need | Facebook Ads for Music

While there are so many different advertising techniques and approaches, I like to keep it simple. I’m going to take you through the creation of a Facebook ad that focuses on getting an artist more exposure and streams on Spotify.

Just a heads up* – This is a guide that shows the basics and doesn’t dive into the details of every aspect in Facebook advertising.

What You Need:

  • Facebook Page and Instagram Business Account

  • Facebook Ad Account and Pixel

  • HyperFollow on DistroKid* or a website with pixel conversion tracking

  • 15 second graphic or video clip with your music in the background (More in the set up section)

Ad Set:

1. Name Your Ad Set.

2. Choose your Conversion Event.

For this example, I’m using DistroKid and a HyperFollow Page set up with my pixel information. The conversion event triggered for HyperFollow’s Spotify click is “clickSpotify”

3. Include/Exclude countries you want to target (All Spotify Countries for this example).

4. Choose your target age range.

5. Enter Detailed Targeting information

For Detailed Targeting you want to include people that are interested in “Spotify” and then Narrow Further from there. From there, you can enter 3-5 similar artists or genres that are closely related to your music.

6. Turn Detailed Targeting Expansion – ON.

7. Exclude people who like your page (we want to find NEW People)

8. Edit Manual

For Manual Placements you want to use just a few options. This is what I recommend for starting out.

  • Facebook News Feed

  • Instagram Feed

  • Facebook Video Feeds

  • Instagram Explore

  • Instagram Stories

  • Facebook Stories

  • Messenger Stories

9. Click the Next

Ad Creative:

1. Name Your Ad.

2. Choose the correct Identity

3. Upload 15 second Graphic or Video.

For this, I am using a 9:16 vertical video that can also be cropped to 1:1. It fits both Story and Feed Placements.

4. Enter Primary Text.

When it comes to the ad text, I like to keep it short and simple. A song lyric followed by a relatable emoji is always a good choice.

5. Enter Website URL.

The URL is the link to your Landing Page. For this example, I’m using DistroKid and a HyperFollow Page set up with my pixel information. The landing page is set up to only allows users to choose Spotify for listening.

6. Set Call to Action to “Listen Now”.

7. Click the Next

BOOM! That’s it. You now have a Facebook Ad promoting your music. Let it run and watch your steams and discovery grow.
