An Interview With Carl Pariso

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“I wrote Just For an Hour with another Nashville based songwriter, Daniel Hansen. I came to him with the the chorus of the song and wanted to flesh out the rest with him. It was our first song we ever wrote together. I wanted to capture the anxiety behind the inability to communicate an infatuation with “the girl of your dreams” so to speak. It has tones of comedy woven through the text but also a sense of sincerity. I arranged the song to show the growth of confidence in the first person character the song, and hope it connects to people and inspires them to shoot their shot!”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I grew up constantly surrounded by music as my dad was a very accomplished and professional opera singer at The Metropolitan Opera. Not only is he a talented singer, but he also is well versed in guitar, bass, and banjo. I always loved to sing. My mom told me that I could sing well before I could talk. In middle school, I had a strong interest in learning how to play guitar and bass. I was eager to start a band, so my dad gave me lessons. Once I put my band together, I realized we needed our own songs to play. I immediately tried my hand at songwriting, and fell deeply in love with the craft.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I have a vast interest in many genres and like to try my hand at a lot of them while also fusing some together. I would say it all falls under the umbrella of pop/rock. I have influences from artists like Bruce Springsteen, Bare Naked Ladies, Incubus, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, and many more.”

What does your music represent?

“I try to create a personal journal with my music. Each song tends to capture a moment in time through my life and talks a lot about themes of love, heartbreak, the workforce, purpose, and so forth.”

What is your creative process like?

“For songwriting, it can be anything. I could be in a conversation with someone, and something that they say or something I say gives me an idea for a song. I will say that I am more of a melody guy. Most times, I hear a melody in my head that won’t get out and it almost begs me to be written. I’ll record a voice memo or start writing lyrics to that melody.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Bruce Springsteen, Incubus, and Simple Plan”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Don't let yourself get in your own way. When I moved to Nashville. Deep down I really wanted to pursue music, but I pushed down that want. The fear of starting from square one was overwhelming. I created a lack of confidence in myself, and allowed myself to wallow in that self-doubt for over a year. I wish I hadn't taken so long to find the motivation and ambition again. I spent too much time getting in my own way.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I always enjoyed and did well in history classes. I think if I didn’t do music, I would want to be an archeologist or historian of some sort.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“I think being able to express your thoughts and emotions in a impactful medium such as music is such a gift. It makes you a better person and improves your relationships with those around you.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Come out to live shows. That’s the biggest benefit for artists and honestly the biggest benefit to the audience. You get to see “the man behind the curtain” so to speak. You get to see personality from the artist and the artist gets to fulfill their passion in front of a crowd. That’s all any creative really wants. To be seen.”
