An Interview With Madeline Rae

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“There are 12 full moons in one year and 42 moons in 3 and 1/2 years. "42 Moons" uses the moon as a timeline to represent an incredibly hard phase of my life. It was written to empower and to heal, and it has done that and so much more.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I grew up with an upright piano in the living room. My mom was a singer and introduced me to music in the womb. We sang together throughout my childhood and I learned to play piano, write, and harmonize by the age of 5.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“My music blends authentic and synthetic sounds to support raw, honest storytelling and vulnerable lyricism. My style varies between pop and soul with elements of jazz and R&B undertones. My songs contain themes of joy, hurt, healing, and empowerment and the intimate delivery allows for deep connection.”

What does your music represent?

“My music represents authenticity and creates a safe space for reflection and connection.”

What is your creative process like?

“My songs usually start out as lyrics on paper in the form of journal entries or small pieces of poetry. From there, I bring them to the piano and the melody comes naturally.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Bre Kennedy, Eloise, or Olivia Dean.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Treat every performance like an audition. You never know who is listening.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I would be somewhere in the French countryside, sipping wine, listening to the birds sing.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“To me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing this teeny tiny idea- this little, vivid spark of inspiration- take shape into something tangible, something alive, something real. And from there, it becomes something that speaks to people- something that moves and enlightens, and encourages and comforts. It’s amazing. This simple, little thing I created out of nothing has now created a lasting impact on someone. That is, by far, the most rewarding thing.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“It’s hard to fathom just how heavily we as artists rely on the support of our fanbase. If you think about it, our income isn’t fulfilled by a steadfast company salary. It’s based on YOU, the consumer. Without your support, your likes, shares, streams, ticket sales, merchandise purchases, etc, we are no longer able to create the music/art we love. Your support is EVERYTHING. If you really like something someone is creating, it helps so much just to pass word along to a friend, or buy a copy of the newest release on vinyl. You hold all the cards, friends, and we are so very thankful for you!”
