An Interview With Tony Salomone

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“It's called Cool Summer. It's about feeling stuck in a certain period in your life, whether it's a relationship or a job or a state of mind, and hoping/wishing for a change. It's hard to have the strength to make those big changes in your life and sometimes you just have to hope and pray that the future will be brighter. In the end, it always seems to work out for the better."

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I started playing piano when I was 5 years old. Picked up guitar at age 12 and songwriting around age 14. I was always inspired by classic rock bands like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and ACDC, alternative artists like John Mayer and Dave Matthews as well as some hard rock bands like Muse, Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“Energetic Blues Rock, and heartfelt piano-driven Soul”

What does your music represent?

“Lately it has derived from the struggles of the ego. The challenges we face as humans based on our emotional attachments, growing pains, vices and desires. I'm always trying to balance all that with love and wisdom, and trying to live in my higher self, which is way easier said than done sometimes...My music tends to be about those struggles.”

What is your creative process like?

“For me, songs are usually spurred by dramatic emotions, sometimes joyful, but usually troubled. It usually starts with the music for me, and then I sing melodies with nonsense and words start to form. Sometimes the lyrics just pop right out. Other times I free-write about a topic that is heavy on my heart to get lyric ideas. When songs are "done" I usually let them sit for a long while before I actually dig into producing them. I like to do that because it helps me weed out which ones are truly great, after the initial excitement of the song wears off.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Twenty One Pilots, Muse, Paul McCartney”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Be kind to people. Your network is your networth.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Probably playing way too many video games. And I'd be a full-on graphic design nerd.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“The expression of my feelings into a medium is a huge relief. It makes deep emotional experiences feel like they matter and are honored when I put them in a song. It helps me move on. Plus it's just so much damn fun and lifts my spirit.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Wow great question. I think more people should create as much or more than they consume because it contributes to society, makes people happier AND gives people perspective on how valuable art is (how much it's really worth paying for). That being said, I think it's more about what artists can do to support artists. Artists and creatives should put high value on their own work, for the sake of all other creatives. Society will just react to creatives. When we work for free or cheap we're lowering the perceived value of art for all creatives. Creatives should not be afraid to raise prices for their services, or art because it supports all other artists in their field.”
