An Interview With Kaylee Federmann

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“The song is called Good Guys, it's written about someone who says they want a good person who will treat them right like boyfriend/girlfriend style. But they keep only going after the same kind of "bad" people because they love the chase the rush of them - while still complaining they want a "good guy"

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I started in choirs at school and learning how to play guitar from youtube videos. I honestly got inspired from Taylor Swift at a pretty young age and began playing open mics around Boston. I fell in love with the idea of storytelling and using melodies to do so. I always had a super hard time in school and struggled from dyslexia, I felt like there was no rules in writing songs - at least in the beginning haha. I then started taking trips to Nashville and writing with people as I got older, I started playing in different venues around Boston and Nashville. I ended up going to Berklee for a while before dropping out and officially moving to Nashville.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I would say it's still changing and developing for sure, I lean more in the alternative pop/rock direction. My collaborator and I usually write from the ground up with a guitar, sometimes piano. We experiment with different sounds and use influences from modern rock and old pop structures.”

What does your music represent?

“My music represents, my life and my experiences, as well as the ones who feel unheard or ignored. My music represents the art of listening and what that really means. The music represents love and adventure and going through a journey.”

What is your creative process like?

“Usually, it starts with some sort of concept or story idea. Sometimes it starts with a melody and then forms into a fuller song. Then we structure out the basics and build from there. We add all our sonics and then normally go crazy on the vocals. We are super big on vocal production and how it add to the song and story.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Charlotte Sands, Ed Sheeran, Valley”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Always say yes then figure out how to do it later.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I would be still in school, probably learning about phycology or something.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Having a partner to share and build with.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“take a few more chances on smaller artists even without numbers. Give real feedback that will actually help them grow, not just tell them they're not good enough. Respond to email or phone call even if it's a no to the artist - don't leave them in silence.”
