An Interview With Allison Leah

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“I wrote “constellations” about being far from the people you love - I wrote it in a moment where I felt so lonely that I turned to the sky for comfort and I realized that even though I’m far from that person, we can look up and see the same constellations. It’s a reminder that no matter what, you’re not alone."

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I was raised in the suburbs of NYC and that’s where I fell in love with music, creativity, and songwriting. I grew up in an extremely musical family – my dad is a music engineer so he had a studio in NYC and I can recall singing there from as young as four years old. When I was eight, an agent heard me singing at a holiday party and asked if I would be interested in singing in jingles. So, I began working as a jingle-singer at eight years old and recorded familiar jingles like the “Hess Truck” Commercial, GE spots, and radio tags for Z-100, among others. I also was passionate for musical theater and all of these childhood experiences served as a huge inspiration for me. When I was about 14, I discovered songwriting and when I was about 18, I started to really understand what an independent artist was. Once I realized there’s a whole world of independent working musicians, I decided on that career path and never looked back.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I write folk-pop music which means there are elements of both genres in every song I release. I love telling stories akin to a lot of folk writers and adding a pop production style. My most recent project “the weight of my heart” is a collection of 3 folk songs and 3 pop songs! Content wise, I write a lot about love, loss, nostalgia and growing up. I frequently look back on relationships and situations I’ve been in and detail how I’ve grown and what I’ve learned. One of my newest releases, “24 years down” looks at the different years of my life leading up to my 24th birthday and sharing what I’ve learned and how those years shaped who I am.”

What does your music represent?

“I hope it represents my life and can act as a time capsule for it. I love hearing the stories of folks who have been listening to my music for years who feel like they’re growing up with me. I try to be as vulnerable as I can with my lyrics, and I hope my music represents optimism and honesty.”

What is your creative process like?

“I love creating the instrumentation or track first, so the chords or strumming/picking pattern if I’m writing on guitar, and the track if I’m working in the studio. About 3 years ago, I’ve started building tracks with the producer in the studio and writing off of that, and it’s become one of my main ways to create. Once the track is written, melodies will come to mind and the song starts to take shape. Then lyrics come after that!”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Maisie Peters, Gracie Abrams, or Noah Kahan!”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“That you will never be the most talented person in the room, the best dressed, etc, but you can always be the hardest worker.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I hope I’m always writing music and my college degree is in media and communications so I hope I would be working in the entertainment industry in any capacity :)”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“As an artist and creative you get to wear so many hats and I think that’s one of the most rewarding aspects. I get to collaborate with so many people and fill so many different roles. Sometimes i’m an artist, sometimes i’m a writer, background vocalist, arranger, photographer, content creator, guitarist, social media assistant, anything depending on the day. This allows me to meet so many incredible people and be so many different things. It always keeps me excited and eager, and there’s never a dull moment.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Go see indie artists shows!! And support local live music venues!!”
