An Interview With Kara Frazier

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“Hiatus is about remembering to take a break from the daily grind and enjoy life! It was written by me and two of my good friends, Candace in Wonderland and Keyler Matthews with our friend Josh Muckala on production. The writing session was so much fun and we really got into the vibe of just having a good time hanging with each other and that carried through in the lyrics and melody!"

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I started singing and taking voice lessons around 10 years ago, singing in a Karaoke bar in my hometown in Florida every Friday night. That led to me performing on the weekends in bars and restaurants starting at 14 and joining a cover band in my later teens. I recorded my first EP in Nashville with a country producer Norro Wilson, then relocated to Belmont University. I graduated and began releasing music independently. I've being doing so ever since.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“My music has a classic songwriting element that combines sounds of pop with a vintage-type soul groove.”

What does your music represent?

“My hope is that my music can represent a voice for women in music to create art freely without feeling boxed in and a voice for women in general fighting for a space to exist and say what they feel and think.”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process is fueled by whatever inspires me in the moment. I love to set aside time to solo write, because I believe that's when my best ideas for songs are formed. I like to collaborate for my writing and recording process, and build songs from the ground up with writers/producers. For my first album, I'm going to try a different approach of writing every song on piano and guitar, then taking the songs to a producer to bring to life for a more organic sound versus a more pop production sound.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Joss Stone, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats, and Adele (go big or go home, right? Lol)”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“The best advice I've been given is that great arts takes time and comes from authenticity and true vulnerability. I think I'm starting to learn what that really means.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I've always thought in another lifetime I would've liked to have trained as a mental health counselor.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“The most rewarding part of being a creative is the human connection I get to make with people. I'm grateful for the friendships I've made from music and the shared passion we have as creatives.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“I think society in general could be more open to independent artists and not write us off so quickly just because we aren't being played on the radio or on the top playlists. There's so many talented artists out there that aren't at the top of the mainstream that are worth listening to and supporting.”
