An Interview With Mary + Bri

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“This is an original song we wrote called Lakeside. It is a nostalgic pop song that reminisces about a summer romance. It captures the bittersweet truth that we often fail to recognize our affections until they slip away.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“We have always loved music since we were young, coming from a big musical family. Brianna picked up a guitar when she was 12 and started writing and we haven’t stopped since! We realized in high school it was a career we wanted to seriously pursue and since then moved from NY to Nashville to chase our dream!”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“We’re inspired by many different genres and artists/bands. After years of writing and discovering new music our sound has become a melting pot of everything we love. We focus on story telling when it comes to our lyrics, but we lean into an early nostalgic pop when it comes to building our tracks. If we had to describe it in a phrase we’d call it indie cinematic pop!”

What does your music represent?

“Our music has always represented our lives and the people that surround us. Our lyrics are very often inspired by our close friends and families relationships. With that, what our music represents varies over time. But right now it reflects on the experiences we all go through in our twenties and how we work through them (or how we avoid working through them.)”

What is your creative process like?

“Normally our process starts with lyrics. We very often get together to write with ideas and phrases that have been stuck in our minds. Brianna will pick up a guitar or play the piano until we find a melody we like for the lyrics we have. We vocally arrange as we go and create acoustic tracks once we feel we have a finished product! We then work with producers to build up the track!”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, or Miley Cyrus!!”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Never compare yourself to others! Everyone moves at their own pace and has their own strategies for their passions. Stay focused on your path and things will happen for you!”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“We don’t think there would ever be a time where music wasn’t in our lives. But if we had to pick a different career it would definitely still be creative. Our father is an architect and Mary has always been interested in interior design so maybe she would’ve followed in his footsteps. Brianna was always intrigued with music therapy and how it helped people, so maybe she would’ve found a career there!”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“To hear about other people relating to our lyrics! A lot of times our songs are personal and emotional and it’s extremely rewarding to think that our music could help someone get through a hard time the way creating it may have helped us.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Keep listening and exploring! If you like an artist add them to your playlist or library. Engaging with their social medias goes farther than you think!”
