An Interview With Elyse Jewel

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“'Friends' is a very special song to me as it is one of the first songs I wrote where I allowed myself to be completely vulnerable. At 15, being friend-zoned by someone who I thought felt similarly to me was heartbreaking. It was relieving to be able to let my emotions out create a piece of art that is now known as a song I love called "Friends."”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I have always had a connection to music for as long as I can remember. When I was young, I would jump on my bed and scream-sing Taylor Swift music until I finally convinced my parents to put me in music lessons. My first performance was at a small holiday show in my hometown and little 9-year-old me sang "Let it Go." I was shaking as I walked onstage, but as soon as the first note left my mouth, I learned I had nothing to be scared of. That moment allowed me to realize my overwhelming passion I have for sharing songs and stories with people.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I would say my music could be described as having a storytelling and dream pop musicality with pop-rock undertones. I like to create music that is not only fun to listen to but lyrically in depth and meaningful.”

What does your music represent?

“My songs are essentially like diary entries hence my EP titled 'Dear Diary' and they have helped me process emotions I struggle to put into words. My music represents not only my personal journey, but the journey of everyone. We are all living life and attempting to navigate through it all, so while my songs are personal, I hope for them to connect with everyone through different aspects.”

What is your creative process like?

“When an idea pops into my head I immediately start recording on my phone and word vomit lyrics and a melody. I then tend to go back and listen to it and then pick the pieces I feel are most strong for a song. I'll either finish the song or bring it to a session where I'll get with my cowriters and bring the idea to life.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“I would absolutely cry if I could open for Taylor Swift because she has been my role model for as long as I can remember. I would also love to open for Olivia Rodrigo because her music is unique and she has so much fun onstage. Opening for Gracie Abrams would be a dream because her music is raw and genuine and I think our fans would connect with both of our music.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Trust yourself. I used to allow other people to make the creative decisions for myself and I lost the idea of who I wanted to be. It's easy to let people tell you what to do, but once you find your own voice- you should never let it go. It is empowering when you are able to make your own decisions and be the most authentic version of yourself.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“I would probably be in school for musical theater as I always had a love for theater and in another world I was definitely studying for Broadway.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Seeing that my music has evoked change in someone’s life has been rewarding. I had my first headline show in July of 2023 and it opened my eyes to the reality that I am moving people with my craft. Being able to dance around with fans and watch people escape from reality to just connect with my music was surreal. It was special seeing the audience sing along to every word of my songs. Being able to see that my music made people feel things was incredible and made me realize that I make a difference in people’s lives through my art.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Buy merch, share and stream music, and go to shows!!!! It's so fun meeting people and sharing everything I make with others!”
