An Interview With Matthew Thomas
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“Together is about how my Mom has been there for me my whole life in my good and bad situations. She had a 14 hour surgery earlier this year and it was scary not knowing if she would survive it so this is my song to her.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I didn't grow up in a musical family, it sort of happened my senior year of high school i started posting covers on instagram and then wanted to take vocal lessons and that really is how my journey began that led me to nashville.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“I describe it as if Ed sheeran and Charlie puth had a baby and then they lost that baby and when it turned 18 it came on there doorstep it was me.”
What does your music represent?
“My music represents honesty and vulnerability on a different level, when it comes to relationships mental health spiritual levels all of it nothing left unsaid.”
What is your creative process like?
“My creative process is always especially if im in a cowrite asking the person or persons what is the best and worst thing thats happened to them in the last month. i feel like you can either come into the writing room with ideas or make ideas off of your experiences in the last month. i'm definitely a melody writer I've learned since i've been in Nashville, so that is definitely what i start with first.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Charlie Puth, Alec Benjamin, Ed Sheeran”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“To always walk in a room and know that you don't know the most and that you should be a sponge and soak up any and all the value knowledge you may pick up.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“probably something in sports, i wanted to be a sports broadcaster growing up.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“If I do it right, and I’m authentic to myself, I know that I’ll have created something that I can be proud of and revisit for the rest of my life. One of my favorite songs to perform is the first song I ever wrote, called “Peter”. Its amazing to think about what that song meant to me when I was 16 and remembering how I felt writing it. I think about what it means to me now and realize how I’ve grown as a person and an artist. Knowing that I’ve created something that will always have meaning to me and can never be taken away or broken is pretty amazing.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Just going to our shows, commenting and liking our posts on social media and streaming and pre saving our songs it means more than you know it allows us to be one small step closer to the ultimate dream doing this in front of thousands of people someday.”
