An Interview With Jack Holliday

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“This song started as a request for an anniversary and luckily I got the authorization to make it one of my own. It's a love song, plain and simple.”

What inspired you to start playing and making music?

“My older brother. I've been singing since I was 3 years old. My brother was singing Hank Williams "Hey Good Lookin" at our small town amphitheater and he did so well that I wanted to take a crack at the song. I escaped my mothers supervision and climbed on stage for my chance in the spotlight. Though I could only speak a few words, I killed it.”

How would you describe your process for writing?

“I don't really have a set routine that I follow, but my writing overall works as a wave. I write rhythmically, musically, and lyrics all at once as a start and then go back and edit what I think could be better. I think creating as a whole could be something we don't need to think much about in the beginning of the process. True, raw emotion or ideas is how it all begins.”

What is your favorite thing about being in the world of music?

“Most definitely the creative process.”

What is your least favorite thing so far?

“Sore back and muscle cramps”

Who is your local "Artist-To-Follow"?

“Natasha Blaine is a definite. Writing with her is a treat and she has great music out too.”

Any advice for new a new Artist in Nashville?

“That there is a difference between confidence and ego. Humility is a necessity.”

Describe your worst performance. What did you learn?

“I forgot the words to the first verse of Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. It was in front of 500 people so instead I decided to scat. It may have been incredibly obvious but I think it worked out okay. From that, I learned that preparation is very important, especially for singers.”

Which skills have you gained to help you give the best performance as a musician?

“I think the best thing you can develop is your ear. That's where it all begins asking yourself "what is the key", "am I in the right key?" or "what notes should I use in this moment that can really make the progression shine?", and over time it slowly becomes muscle memory. I like to think that listeners have better ears than what we give them credit for.”

What qualities do you look for in a fan or follower?

“If they vibe with my sound.”
