An Interview With Ginn Swanson

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“I'll be performing my songs Silver Child and Begging You. Silver Child is all about finding your way in your 20s, discovering who you are, what you want, and taking unconventional paths. I loved the concept behind this song. We all know what the "golden child" is, but what about the silver, the bronze? haha. Silver Child is for the kids who find themselves on a path of uncertainty, for the dreamers, the artists, the wild ones. Begging You is about wanting to rekindle the romance in a relationship. I think everyone who has been in a long relationship at some point has wanted to go back to the start, and has maybe felt unnoticed or unappreciated.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I have always sung my whole life and started when I was young singing opera and musical theatre. I also loved making music videos as a kid to Beyonce and Christina songs. I love to dance too. I eventually went to Belmont for musical theatre, and upon graduating in 2020, the pandemic caused a career shift for me. I started writing in 2020 and re-learning guitar (I've played off and on since high school when I took a class) as a way to pass the time. Then I started singing with bands and gigging here in town and the rest is where I'm at today.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I love making pop music, and I definitely have influences from rock, R&B and disco/funk. I kinda feel like I'm a bit genre-fluid. I love singing all styles of music. I hope my music inspires people to write whatever they feel, to stay true to themselves and the song, and to not put themselves in a box. I feel like the industry as a whole puts pressure on people to decide who they want to be commercially and what they want to do right from the get go. It's like - let's write the songs first, let them be what they want to be, and have the MUSIC define who we are! It's a bit of putting the cart before the horse in my opinion.”

What does your music represent?

“I love writing fun pop bops, but I also love exploring topics of how technology and social media has affected our culture, industry and mental health, feminism and the female experience in a male dominated field, life in the music industry, personal relationship experiences, life in your 20s, girl power anthems!”

What is your creative process like?

“It depends! When I write alone, often I get a singular lyrical or melody idea first and I build around it. Sometimes I make beats and progressions on Ableton and I like using session view to come up with melody ideas. I really like co-writing also, sometimes when I cowrite its just me, someone else and a guitar, or I make a beat with someone and we write to that. Or I work with my producer, Frank. Or I send a demo to my band and we work on a song together. They always make the song 1000% better. Hi band love you!”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Christina Aguilera would be amazing I would cry. I also love Molly Grace and her music, she's also so nice. Big fan of Amelia Moore too, Dua Lipa. There's so many artists I love.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“You need time to think. Thinking is an extremely powerful tool. Also, make sure your legal stuff, split sheets, metadata, registration is in order. Also, write with as many people as you can. (This is 3 separate pieces of advice lol).”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Probably living in New York, pursuing acting/musical theatre. I do love acting a lot and miss it! I also love film and being on set.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Freedom”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Engage with and share our content (free!), follow us on Spotify (free!), come to shows (often free showcases!), buy merch.”
