An Interview With Eliza Harrison Smith
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“I performed my songs "Bring You Down" and "Backslide", which are both part of my EP "The Way I'm Wired" that I released in January of this year. The whole EP is super introspective and is all about mental health and self-betterment and just trying to figure out life!”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I've always loved music, but I was inspired to pick up the guitar and start writing songs when I saw Taylor Swift live when I was 13. I basically just wanted to be her...I fell in love with songwriting and once I started, I never wanted to stop.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“I would describe my music as introspective indie-pop. I love the juxtaposition of hooky pop melodies and breezy indie production with vulnerable, sad lyrics.”
What does your music represent?
“I think that my music touches on topics that are hard or uncomfortable to talk about. In my experience, the more vulnerable I am in my music, the more other people have said that they've found themselves in my music, which is really cool.”
What is your creative process like?
“I love to co-write! A lot of the time I'll come up with a concept or a lyrical hook for a song, and then I'll bring that idea to my collaborators, and we'll flesh out the melody and lyrics together. I used to write mostly by myself, but since being in Nashville, I've gotten to meet and work with so many amazing songwriters and producers. I know that any idea I have could be made so much better and more interesting if I bring it into a co-write, versus trying to finish it out on my own.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Noah Kahan, Sam Fender or Gracie Abrams”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“It's so cliche, but "be yourself". When I first came to Nashville, I felt pressured to write music that fit a specific mold. But, the more I've leaned into what I think is cool and what I want to sound like, the prouder I am of my songs, and the more other people seem to connect to them.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“I'd probably work in marketing or copywriting - at least that was the plan before I decided to give music a try.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“It's so fun to just make music with my friends. I feel so lucky to be living in Nashville, where there are so many like-minded people, and we get to do what we love together. It's also been really cool to start to see people in different states and countries listening to my music and telling me they relate to it.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Going out to shows and buying merch! With the way streaming has devalued music, I think it's more important than ever to support artists in those tangible ways if you can.”
