An Interview With Jonathan Soul

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“Shadow Games was created out of place of deeply rooted lie that I was unlovable. A former girlfriend told me that she thought she could never love me and I believed it for a long, long time. One night, I saw these shadows playing on the wall in my room and started with this idea that I don’t want these Shadow Games playing with my head and my heart. I brought the idea to Nick Fabian, an amazing talent in Nashville, and we brought the idea to life. It is one of my most requested songs and I love playing it out.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“Listening to my Dad playing piano when I was very very young. It was my first experience of Church and Grace - it keeps me calm and peaceful.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“If Justin Timberlake had a love child with John Mayer that was adopted by Sting. Groove, pop polish and lyrical/emotional depth.”

What does your music represent?

“A place to let your guard down, experience all the aspects of being human and allowing God to meet you where you are at. My hope that those who listen will hear the invitation that Jesus has to journey with them in their life.”

What is your creative process like?

“I love collaborating with other writers and playing a song out at writers rounds. It allows the music to breathe and see what works. Sometimes I will write on my own, but I love connecting and bringing a song to life with friends and cowriters. I have learned to keep the gifts I have been given, I have to give it away.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Andy Grammer, Marc Broussard, Steven Curtis Chapman”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Take the action in spite of the fear and learn from your mistakes. I have learned that I write for my self, I record for my myself, but I play and release music for others.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Sales/Motivational Speaking”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Bringing to life an idea and creating a melody and feel that can capture someone’s heart for a moments.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Be an engaged fan.”
