An Interview With Sophia Roselle
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“You know those days when everything feels like it’s unraveling and then one tiny, stupid thing makes you completely lose it? Well, the song I’m performing today, Wreckage, came to life after I reached my limit on one of those days. I was already overwhelmed with anxiety and imposter syndrome, and then I actually scraped my car on one of those giant cement poles in a parking garage. That was the final straw, but it turned into this song. At its heart, it’s about sitting with those feelings instead of pushing them away, and my hope is that it makes people feel a little more understood and less alone.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
I can still vividly remember dancing around and singing my heart out to Mamma Mia when I was three years old. My mom used to play ABBA on repeat, and that was really my first musical experience that sparked my love for singing and songwriting. By the time I was six, I was running around with a karaoke machine, trying to convince my parents to let me audition for American Idol. But my journey as a professional singer-songwriter didn’t truly begin until I studied songwriting at Belmont University, where I really started to hone my craft and find my own voice.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“I’d describe the music I usually make as kind of a whirlwind of emotions conveyed through pop that blends vulnerability with humor. Since everything I write is a reflection of me, I often explore topics like mental health, love, heartbreak, and self-discovery in your twenties. I like to combine my Taylor Swift-influenced storytelling, the subject matter and melodic qualities I love in Fleetwood Mac, and the danceable energy I adore in ABBA.”
What does your music represent?
“My music reflects what it is like to navigate your early twenties as a young woman, full of chaos, confusion, and big emotions. It is about being honest with yourself, learning from mistakes, facing anxiety and heartbreak, and finding the strength to keep going. At its core, it is emotional, vulnerable, and fun, and I hope it serves as an outlet for anyone going through the same experiences.”
What is your creative process like?
“Every day, I sit down with my guitar and just start humming out a melody or writing down words that represent whatever it is I’m feeling. As someone who feels all of my emotions really deeply and who has a lot of them, most of my songs are always born from a very emotional and vulnerable place. From there, I usually get a quick voice memo and then decide if it’s a song I want to finish myself or if it’s something I want to have collaborators on. If I’m not writing during the height of my emotions, I usually pull from a notes app I have where I literally write down everything that happens to me that could possibly be a song.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Taylor Swift would be the ultimate dream, Sabrina Carpenter, or Chappell Roan”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“The best advice I’ve gotten is to always stay true to yourself. The songs that connect most come from honesty, and focusing on that has helped me grow as an artist and connect with my audience.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“If I wasn’t doing music, I’d probably be in law, trying to tackle social justice issues that matter to me. Thankfully, I get to explore some of that through my songwriting, and I hope that as I grow as an artist, my music can make an impact too.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“The most rewarding part of being a creative is the impact it can have on people. It has been so heartwarming to watch supporters become friends and see how my music has started to create a small community. Growing up, I often felt out of place in high school and found connection in YouTuber fan groups. Knowing my music helps people feel less alone, whether through the songs or friendships in the fandom, is why I love doing this so much.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Being an independent artist is really hard because you’re juggling so many roles and don’t always get the support you need. That’s why fans streaming music and engaging with our art in meaningful ways makes such a difference. I hope as more artists push back against how little streaming services pay, fans will stand behind us to help create change.”
