An Interview With Maddie Ettrich

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“The Song is called “Death of a Pacifist.” It’s about that feeling when you end up comforting the person who hurt you. Apologies ending in tears but nothing feels truly resolved. You have absolved their guilt and but you don’t feel any better. ”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“Growing up in Canada, my neighbor used to play guitar and sing songs for my friend and I. I thought it was the most magical thing. I used to do little shows for my parents and steal my dads walkman. When I was old enough to drive I started playing anywhere that would let me.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I venture between a mixture of cinematic pop and indie pop rock”

What does your music represent?

“My music represents my own experiences I have lived through but also tends to touch on the feelings of fleeting youth, love and loss, and the human experience.”

What is your creative process like?

“I tend to start with visuals. Whether that be images in my head, or a word that brings up good visuals when I think of it. A lot of my ideas are story based so when I write music I tend to play out the scenes in my head. One of my favorites parts, after the creation of the song, is building a world for that song to live in.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Phoebe Bridgers, Soccer Mommy, & Olivia Rodrigo”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

““All too often, it is audacity and not talent that moves an artist to center stage.” - Julia Cameron”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Swimming with whales for National Geographic... or maybe becoming a Chef?”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“I write my music to share stories and share experiences. It is so rewarding to hear when other people not only relate to your music but also use it as a tool to process their own experiences or even just to brighten a day.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Continue to support indie artists, attend shows, and buy merch. We live in a day and age where it is both easier than ever to be an indie artist and harder to make it a viable career.”
