An Interview With Austin Taylor
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“The song I’m performing is called “The Valley”. I wrote this song to have a dual meaning, speaking to my childhood in Valley, Alabama and to experiences in the valleys in my life”
What inspired you to start playing and making music?
“I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember and creating songs has always come naturally to me. I do it because it makes me happy. It helps me process my experiences in life”
How would you describe your process for writing?
“I almost always start with a melody. I get melodic ideas randomly and sometimes they just stick. When I finally decide to add words, I usually just sing gibberish until something real comes out and I build the song around that. Kinda weird to explain. I always just know when I’ve reached the right words”
What is your favorite thing about being in the world of music?
“Community and expression. I love hearing the way other people craft their stories. I love the way that music feels”
What is your least favorite thing so far?
“Perhaps shallow music. I’m not sure”
Who is your local "Artist-To-Follow"?
“I don’t have a particular favorite these days. I enjoy following a lot of artists that I’ve met in my time here in Nashville. I particularly pay close attention to the artists who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting through “Nashville Sound Lounge”
Any advice for new a new Artist in Nashville?
“Just be yourself. Your voice and your experiences are unique and there is way more to life than “making it” in the music industry”
Describe your worst performance. What did you learn?
“Eh, maybe my first writers round. Or perhaps my recent performance at The Electric Jane. I just needed to allow myself to figure out who it is that I’m becoming”
Which skills have you gained to help you give the best performance as a musician?
“Honesty. I’ve struggled with being honest, but the more that I practice it, the better writer, person, and performer I become”
What qualities do you look for in a fan or follower?
“None. If you vibe with me, I’m glad you’re here”
