An Interview With Eva Cassel
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“"Somebody Else" is about a really formative relationship that helped me become a better version of myself. I think just because a relationship ends doesn't mean it failed if you both walk away having learned something. I wanted to pay homage to that person and relationship and I hope that they feel the same way about me.
"Given Up" is a song I wrote when I was really depressed and frustrated with myself. I felt like I was at war with myself all the time, and this song was me telling myself to get my act together before it's too late.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I have always been drawn to music. I started making up little tunes and putting on shows for my stuffed animals when I was little. The fascination grew and grew, I started learning to play a bunch of instruments and writing full length songs. Unlike school or sports, music felt intuitive for me. It created a channel for me to understand myself and others.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“I would describe my music as Americana. It's a melting pot of folk, jazz, pop and soul. My songs are lyric focused with an intimate vocal and warm guitar part underneath.”
What does your music represent?
“My music represents my experience as a highly sensitive person who wants to understand herself and connect with others.”
What is your creative process like?
“I often start with a big feeling or lyric idea and develop the song from there. Sometimes I'm inspired by a chord voicing or a vibe/groove. There's always some little seed and then I build the rest of the song around it.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Madison Cunningham, Madi Diaz, Brittany Howard.”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“It's all about the hang. Believe in yourself and put yourself in rooms with people you admire.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“If I wasn't absolutely obsessed/head over heels for music? I think I'd be a therapist and a yoga teacher. And I would maybe lean farther into my hobbies like cooking, gardening, film photography..”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“The most rewarding aspect is connection. Music creates a channel to myself and others on a deeper level. I love to get better and better, watch myself evolve and change and create magic with people I love.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Go to shows. Buy merch. Listen to songs. Talk about/share songs with your friends. Talk about the significance of art/music with people you love.”
