An Interview With Grace Day

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“It's about deciphering between the sources of your inner voices and convictions, and how the older you get the less sure you become and missing the peace of naivety”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“My musical journey began in the lively streets of Galway, Ireland, where I was first pulled on stage at an open mic. Though I’d been writing songs since I bought my first guitar at twelve, I was initially too shy to sing them publicly. While at college in Galway I was inspired to find my voice and join a band. Though the band was made up of friends (And we weren't that good lol), it gave me the confidence and a love for performing live. Shortly after this, I started writing my own songs and releasing them as a solo artist!”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I would describe my music as brutally honest, sometimes humorous, heartbreaking, and hopefully all three of these things at once as often as possible!”

What does your music represent?

“I think my music explores what it means to be human. The themes are very universal, but the content is sometimes uncomfortably honest. I always like to have one line in my songs that I would be embarrassed for my mother to hear because I don't see the point in creating art unless it shows every facet of you - the good, bad, and the ugly. I like to write about the everyday struggles of being human - heartbreak, mental health issues, trying to find your path in the world, dating struggles, relationship issues etc. But I also like to put a humorous spin on the devastating realities of the world, because we need humor to get us through it haha!”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process is very spontaneous. I often like to write over a long period of time. (a week/month/several months) I rarely finish a song in one sitting, but I'm always observing and storing away ideas mentally and physically (in my notes app) If one were to go through my phone they would find many muffled voice recordings of ideas that hit me at odd times throughout the day as well as many unfinished lyrics in my notes app. I usually start with a melody and the lyrics follow!”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Dermot Kennedy, Phoebe Bridgers, Kacey Musgraves”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“There are input periods and output periods as a creative. Don't beat yourself up if you're in a period of low output. Take the time to live and experience the world and the ideas will come!”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Hmm I think I would be a teacher! I really like teaching. I taught English for a year in France before deciding to move to Nashville to pursue music.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Nothing beats the feelings of writing a damn good song! Sometimes it's maddening actually writing a song, but I really love having written a song!”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Music plays such an important part of our society, but unfortunately, I feel that at some point we collectively determined that music is not a valuable art form worth paying for. We will spend $8 on a coffee but are extremely reluctant to spend 99c purchasing a song on iTunes. Spotify has made it clear that they do not value artists or songwriters by paying embarrassingly low royalties. I think DSPs need to do a better job paying artists and creators and as a society I think we need to let go of the idea that we deserve music for free.”
