An Interview With Fiona Maura
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“Lone wolf is inspired by my passion and love for solo traveling. After voyaging on my own to Ireland, Scotland, and London and living the most magical and fairytale like experiences I wanted to capture the freedom and liberation I feel in times of solidarity and self connection. Maura is my second song and this name means “Star of the Sea” which is also my middle name. This song takes the listener on an introspective journey of evolving into a higher version of self and a personal spiritual awakening. These lyrics pour from the depths my soul and explore themes of how our human experience resembles nature in many ways such as metamorphosis and growth.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I grew up in a musical family, in 2010 we had a family band. I was in choir, musical theatre and piano lessons since the early days and I picked up guitar when I was 12. Around middle school I starting writing music as a coping mechanism and as a few years went by my mom began helping to book me at local venues and folk festivals through out Florida—some of the festivals were the same ones I played in our family band. I moved outside of Nashville after high school and graduated from MTSU with Recording Industry Songwriting Concentration and Minor in Psychology in 2020. Since then I’ve moved to the city and began playing writers rounds which has now led me to full band immersive shows at notable Nashville venues. Within the past 2 years I have been interweaving sound bowls and sound healing into my live shows and am excited to continue this journey.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“I create a dreamy, soulful folk ambience that blends spiritual lyricism and sound healing, exploring the journey of our multidimensional human experience. I draw inspiration from my personal journey, nature, and the idea of healing through sound. Using acoustic guitar and sound bowls, I create layers of texture and emotion that connect deeply with listeners. It’s music that feels raw, reflective, and uplifting, designed to bring comfort and spark a sense of inner peace and transformation.”
What does your music represent?
“My music represents a fusion of soulful folk melodies, spiritual storytelling, and ethereal sound healing. Through my songs, I aim to capture themes of personal transformation, emotional depth, and connection to nature and the divine. I want my music to create a transcendent experience, offering listeners a sense of healing, introspection, and empowerment. By blending poetic lyrics with the acoustic guitar and incorporating sound bowls, I strive to reflect growth, self-reclamation, and the intertwining of art and spirituality.”
What is your creative process like?
“My creative process flows and changes. At times I will be inspired and create lyrics based on present feelings or a theme/idea that ignites me, other times I will create the music first and let lyrics come after, and I have even seen visuals/visions and written poems from them that morph into songs. I love collaborating with others and drawing a lot of inspiration from spirituality and love.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Aurora, Raveena, Jhene Aiko”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“Authenticity is the key”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“I facilitate sound baths and am reiki certified so I would continue with my wellness practice.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“The heart warming feedback I hear from others after my performance especially a recurring feeling of calmed, centered, grounding and present energy as well as the connections I’ve made with fellow creative have nourished my soul and breathe life into me.”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Come out to live shows and engage and share on social media can help a lot.”
