An Interview With Hannah Blanchard

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

“Stop is about remembering to take a breath amongst life's craziness and enjoy the journey! It's a reminder that we all go through hard times and you're not alone in that! Written with Alex Bonyata, this was released this year as my second single (with Alex as a feature on the track) and 1st recorded co-write! Tattoo was my first ever recorded song about falling for someone at the wrong time but wanting them to be a part of your life anyway. This song was anonymously funded at the time, and it wasn't until way after the release that I learned who donated the money. thanks Chandler Flint! :)”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I've been playing piano since I was 11 or 12 in my dad's small studio at our house. Music runs in my family so I guess it's just always been there. From watching my dad lead worship as a kid to later watching him and my Uncle in their classic rock band, music has always been around. Isang from a young age as well (although I was insanely shy and scared to sing in front of others.) It wasn't until I started in theatre in high school, that I really started coming out of my shell performing.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“I would say it's mostly singer/songwriter - pop with some soul mixed in. I love a chance to throw in a run or a jazzy sound.”

What does your music represent?

“I think my music mostly represents myself and the feelings I'm going through at the time. I mostly write to help myself figure out my own feelings.”

What is your creative process like?

“It normally starts with an emotion or feeling that I need to process. I sit down at the piano or grab my guitar and play a chord and just see what words flow out of me that needs to be said. It's very cathartic and a constructive outlet.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Tori Kelly, Rascal Flatts (if they were still together) and/or Marc Broussard”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Stay to true to yourself and your story/song. People will tell you their opinions on your music, which can be constructive, but ultimately, only you can tell the story in your heart that needs to be told.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Probably babysitting/nannying for my niece and nephew.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Meeting someone who connects with a song you wrote. Just that sense of understanding is amazing to me. We're all human and all go through similar things. When I write something that is very personal and I think, no one will understand, but then somebody does and connects with you, it's so great. We can all learn from each other and empathize with each other through music.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“I think shifting the way we see music would help. It seems to have become sort of a rat-race to see who is going to be the next big thing, or what song can be turned into a TikTok, rather than seeing each song as a piece of art and as a piece of the artist themselves. I don't think these things are bad necessarily, but when the quality of the music is judged based on these criteria, I think we miss out on a lot of great artists and songs and lose that connection.”
