An Interview With Larysa Jaye

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

"I wrote this song as a 26 year old single mother of three. The beginning of it was literally my to do list for the evening and I kind of just kept going with it and wrote a whole song that I loved. But I didn't think it was a song that would be for the masses. So I never sang it out. It crossed my mind a couple years ago and I sang it at a writers round and people loved it to my surprise. But now when I sing it I have perspective of single mom, married mom, step mom, divorced mom.... and that is so cool to me, Bc there's not a lot of songs like this out here for moms.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“I've always loved music. Church girl. So I would make up songs on the family keyboard. I took choir, violin, tenor sax... picked up guitar at 16 and was really heavily writing at that age w/ guitar and keyboard. Moved to Nashville w/ my family at 17 and been here ever since. I never let the music bug go. And continued to find ways to live a "normal life" but still include music. And now I'm blessed to get to do it full time.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“my music is my personal therapy a lot of times. I write all types of music. As an artist, I'm really focused on Americana/roots type right now. But normally my songs cover a lot of ground in the genre world. Which has been a blessing and a curse I feel. But I"m grateful I've stuck to my guns bc i make a living do music my way.”

What does your music represent?

“Normally my songs cover a lot of ground in the genre world. Which has been a blessing and a curse I feel. But I"m grateful I've stuck to my guns bc i make a living do music my way. So for me it represents a 39 year old black woman. Who is a mother. who's loved and lost love. who's unafraid to keep trying. it represents all of that.”

What is your creative process like?

“random. but I"m a really big first verse and chorus person. but a lot of times a first line or a concept. then i sit and play the same progression over and over until I feel the ancestors tell me the next line. (a joke but for real)”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Well since Beyonce has been so generous lately let's start with Queen B, Jazmine Sullivan, Chris Stapleton”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“If they crack the door open, kick it in.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Moving up the ranks in hospitality probably. My last full time job was w/ Marriott. And I really enjoyed it.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Being a creative has really opened up freedom for me to live and schedule life around my family. That is priceless.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
