An Interview With Alex Bonyata
Tells us about the song you are performing for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?
“I’m performing my latest release “I Should Feel Better” featuring Bella Rose and my upcoming release “Crush”. “I Should Feel Better” is about feeling down even when your life is going well and you don’t’ really have a reason to feel bad. “Crush” is about the all-consuming feeling of falling for someone- the stage where you don’t know where it’ll go or if it’ll work out but they’re all you can think about.”
What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?
“I began playing piano and guitar at 5 years old, and I was fired from my guitar lessons after 2 lessons - I now make a living from playing guitar so I came back around to it eventually. Around middle school I became obsessed with writing songs and learning to play every instrument I could find, and in high school I got accepted into the Grammy Museum Music Revolution Project which led to opportunities to open for bigger acts like Ringo Starr and Andy Grammer and got me on the road to touring and playing music professionally.”
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
“Anthemic music with sad lyrics”
What does your music represent?
“Honest vents of emotions that I hope will resonate with others and help them through what they’re going through”
What is your creative process like?
“I write a lot with/for other artists which has helped me with developing my creative process and learning from other talented writers. All my songs I’ve written for my own projects have come from moments where I needed to get my feelings out and immediately get to the piano and start writing.”
If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?
“Bleachers, Sam Fender, The 1975”
What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?
“My music business professor told me to visualize a traffic cone where your dream job in music is the top of the cone, but there’s lots of other opportunities that fall somewhere further down or still within the cone, like teaching lessons or playing cover gigs where you still can earn a living within the music industry and develop your craft. I’ve told all my friends about the cone and I think it’s catching on.”
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
“I’m very into backpacking - I used to be a guide on the Appalachian trail as my summer job and I go to the mountains any chance I get. I’d probably be a backpacking guide or park ranger, any type of job that has me out in nature”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“Having people sing your lyrics back to you at a concert”
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?
“Go to local shows and support the artists in your community by buying merch, sharing their music, etc.”
