An Interview With Ryan Neal

Tells us about the song you are performing  for the Nashville Pop Artist Spotlight. What is it about?

"Up My Sleeve came about in one special night - the writing, recording, production and mixing. I had a listening party for my first EP scheduled for a Saturday night and come Friday evening, I was still looking for another song to fill the void. It all came about so suddenly - the groove, lyrics and melody - I had to stay up all night and see it through from start to finish. It will always be a special song to me because it’s the title track of my first EP and also remains a very powerful reminder to remain true to myself and not let the outside world cloud my inner vision.”

What first got you into music? How did the journey begin?

“My paternal grandmother was a professional pianist and although she developed severe dementia late in life, she could still remember piano pieces from when she was 7 or 8. I thought that was a superpower. That coupled with seeing "School of Rock"and it was over.”

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

“Motown Bounce - music heavily inspired by soul singers and hip-hop producers.”

What does your music represent?

“To be honest, I've never thought about that. I just sing/play what I like and if I REALLY like it, I put it out. 99% of my music is on my hard drive sadly. I try not to take myself as an "artist" too seriously.”

What is your creative process like?

“It's always different - random car voice notes, beat boxing, singing, playing guitar/keys or just remaking a song in Ableton. Anything can spark an idea.”

If you were to open for any 3 artists, who would they be?

“Allen Stone, Stevie Wonder, My Morning Jacket”

What is the best advice you’ve been given so far in the music industry?

“Be you - the rest are taken.”

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

“Neurosurgeon”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

“Seeing how my "work" can bring joy to people's lives, even for a brief moment in time.”

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives such as yourself?

“Go to shows, buy merch, tell their friends about their favorite song of yours and hire them to sing at your wedding!”
